AMITA TRUST – MITAA SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME
Dear fellow alumnus,
Greetings from the parent chapter of the MIT Alumni Association. Over the years we have been interacting with the institute and the students and have been contributing in some way to their betterment. We have over the last four years come with the proposal to provide scholarship to the economically weaker section of the students at MIT. So for over the years, thanks to the munificence of our alumni, we have been able to generate about rupees two crore plus as a part of the corpus fund instituted for the same. We would like to increase the corpus further to cover more students and also to evolve new scheme to assist the students and the almamater. To recap, we now present the scheme to you and appeal to you to generously contribute to the corpus. We also appeal to you to convey this proposal details to as many alumni as possible to get this scheme a wide coverage.
1. Introduction: MIT now admits around 1200 students in the UG Program. 200 students in PG. These are students who have generally excelled in their academics but many of them are from economically disadvantaged background. In order to help these students, members of MITAA have been providing a few scholarship equivalent to their annual fees. Apart from the Chennai Emirates, Australia have been contributing to this annual effort. The alumni from individual batches have also been providing Scholarships to some of the students by the way of meeting their hostel fees. Others have also set up some funds for scholarships through foundations from the United States etc.
In order to have a long term, consistent and a clear program of scholarship, MITAA decided to set up a corpus fund with a minimum amount of Rs.60 Lacs initially increased subsequently to Rs. 2 Crores, with contributing from the Alumni living worldwide. Income from this corpus is being utilized for providing the scholarships. The recipients will be expected to contribute to the corpus after they start earning. We are planning for a next step of Reaching 3 Crores to help 120 Students.
2. The scheme: We are providing Rs 20,000 per annum to deserving students, one each from the 9 faculties. So far we have collected about Rd. 2 Crores. So far we have been able to assist around 81 students a year at MIT under this scheme in 2015-2016 and 368 students from inception.
3. Criteria for selection of the students : We are helping those students whose family income is below Rs. 1,50,000 per annum, who do not possess any immovable property of consequence (no residential dwelling, not more than 3 acres of land) and who are doing well in studies. We will consider students who fulfill the income criteria and who got at least above 85% u=in plus 2. In order that they are eligible each year, they have to get a GPA of at least 7.00. If they do not get such a grade the scholarship may be offered to a candidate who meets the criteria. While the idea is to help the same candidate through the 4 years, we also want to ensure that some minimum qualifications are met. This will mean that the candidates will have to apply for the renewal of the scholarship each year. We will also encourage the recipients to contribute to the fund after they start earning.
4. The Process of Selection: MITAA and MIT will nominate a committee to screen the candidates who will apply in a prescribed format. This committee will also interview prospective candidates. One of the MITAA members will be the coordinator. This committee will evolve the actual criteria and the selection process and will have a Final say on these issues.
5. Contribution: We need to collect the balance amount as early as possible so that more students are benefitted the soonest.
6. We provide medical support to students and teachers for large operation, hospitalization subject to approval by executive committee. We run a book bank in the institute with the support of library to which we add books worth IRS 1, 00,000 on an average per year, books can be retained by full semester. No fee or deposit is charged, this facility is only for MIT Alumni, staff and students. MITAA-AMITA TRUST book bank has 2500 copies of books till March 2016. Useful technical books are accepted as donation.
7. The appeal: We request each member of the MITAA to make an initial contribution of a minimum amount of Rs. 10,000/-. For Indian residents tax exemption certificate under 80G will be provided. In order to get the corpus Collected faster it is suggested that for those of the alumni who contributing Rs. 2,50,000 or more they will be given the privilege of naming one scholarship. The faculty to which scholarship is to be given would be subject to an equitable distribution of faculties. We earnestly request each of you to send the amount at the earliest.
8. NRIs with Indian Passports can send the amount directly and NRIs with Foreign Passports are requested to route the amount through an Indian national. As per Government of India Rules Trust cannot accept donation from Foreign Passport Holders.
