THE OUTSTANDING ALUMNUS AWARD FOR 2016
TO

Dr. V. Nagendran

The MIT Chromepet campus of Anna University, founded in 1949 by Sri C Rajam, is a unique Institution and carved a niche for itself in unconventional engineering courses like Aeronautical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation Technology and subsequently adding Production Technology, Rubber and Plastic Technology, Information Technology and Computer Science and Engineering.

During the centenary birth year of Sri C. Rajam in 1982, MITAA instituted the scheme of presenting annual endowment lecture and an award for the Outstanding Alumnus in his memory. For 2016 MITAA has the unique distinction of choosing an alumnus of the very first batch and founder member of the MITAA, Dr. V. Nagendran as the Outstanding Alumnus.

He passed his Bachelor’s degree in 1962 majoring Mathematics at A.M. Jain College, Chennai. Later, he joined MIT for DMIT course in the year 1962. He took up Instrument Technology. Further he pursued M.B.A. at Madras University. He received Honorary Doctorate [D.Hons] from a reputed Sri Lankan University. He is a member of Institute of Engineers (M.I.E.)

He is well established,a successful entrepreneur and the Founder Chairman of NAGMAN INSTRUMENTS, a Chennai based company, which is 43 years old. He has been honored and awarded by many organization. To name a few “Distinguished Society Service” award by the ISA and “Global Achievers’ award for Industry development”. He has traveled far and wide around the Globe.

NAGMAN is a well-known name in the Industries for its world class Products with ISO/IEC 17025: 2005 Accreditation. NAGMAN INSTRUMENTS exports to over 83 countries and has good track record.

Dr. V. Nagendran lives in Chennai, his wife Mrs Indra Nagendran gives her full support for his successful business. His first daughter and son both Instrumentation Engineers assist him in his business while second daughter who is also an Instrumentation engineer settled in Australia with her family and third daughter employed with HCL, living with her family.

MITAA takes great pleasure in awarding Dr. V. Nagendran the Outstanding Alumnus for the year 2016 and wish him good health and great success in all his future endeavors.

Mr. T.A.S. Balagopal

The MIT Chromepet campus of Anna University, founded in 1949 by Sri C Rajam, is a unique Institution and carved a niche for itself in unconventional engineering courses like Aeronautical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation Technology and subsequently adding Production Technology, Rubber and Plastic Technology, Information Technology and Computer Science and Engineering.

During the centenary birth year of Sri C. Rajam in 1982, MITAA instituted the scheme of presenting annual endowment lecture and an award for the Outstanding Alumnus in his memory. For 2015 MITAA has the unique distinction of choosing an alumnus of the very first batch and founder member of the MITAA, Mr. T.A.S. Balagopal as the Outstanding Alumnus.

After his Bachelor’s degree in Physics under Madras University, he joined MIT at the very inception year 1949.  He took up Automobile Engineering.

He served the alma mater till 1956 as lecturer in automobile engineering. Later he joined an American Oil Company and excelled in his job and got promoted as a District Manager at a very young age. He joined Tatas in 1969 in the new Export department of TELCO (now Tata Motors). He held various positions and became Director (Exports). Under his guidance Tata Motors became the first company to export engineering products worth Rs. 100 crores. He took great interest in export activities of India. He was elected as the Chairman of Engineering Export Promotion Council, sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce, Govt of India. He has written a book “Export Management”, with a Foreword by Dr Abdul Kalam. The book highlights India’s achievement in export and future potential, and is a reference book in Business Schools in India and abroad.

Now Mr. T.A.S. Balagopal lives in Chennai with his wife Dr. Indu Balagopal qualified medically but an ardent social worker and still active. They have two daughters. Elder one is a medical doctor qualified in India and UK and the younger one is specialized in Market Research and lives in Bangalore.

MITAA takes great pleasure in awarding Mr. T.A.S. Balagopal the Outstanding Alumnus for the year 2015 and wish him good health and great success in all his future endeavors.

Mr. K. Balasubramanian

MIT, Chromepet campus of Anna University, founded in 1949 by Sri C Rajam, is a unique Institution and carved a niche for itself with pioneering ventures in unconventional engineering courses like Aeronautical engineering, Automobile engineering, Electronics engineering, Instrumentation Technology and subsequently adding Production Technology, Rubber and Plastic Technology, Information Technology and Computer Science and Engineering.

During the centenary birth year of Sri C. Rajam in 1982, MITAA instituted the scheme of presenting annual endowment lecture and award of Outstanding Alumnus in his memory. This year we choose an alumnus from the 14^th batch Instrument Technology.

MITAA has the pleasure of honouring Mr K. Balasubramanian (fondly called K.Bala) of Instrumentation faculty as the Outstanding Alumnus for the year 2014.

Bala graduated from MIT in 1965. He went to the University of Rhode Island in 1967 and graduated with an MSEE in 1969. He joined Texas Instruments (TI) in Houston in 1969 as and MOS Design Engineer. During his 37 year career at TI, he held various positions in Design, Design Management, Business Management, Worldwide (WW) Manufacturing, WW Quality, WW Procurement, WW Process Development, WW Facilities and President and Chairman of TI, Japan. He was elected as Vice President of TI in 1983, Senior Vice President in 1993. From 2001 till 2006, he was a resident of Japan from where he retired in 2006.

Bala was elected as a Board Member of Metro Bank in 2007 where he headed up the compensation committee. He was also a member of the corporate audit, directors’ loan committee and Directors’ credit committee. K. Bala was recognized as one of the top 100 business leaders in Japan. Rice University in Houston, Texas has named a Visiting Professorship for Digital Signal Processing after him. Texas Instruments has set up a scholarship for High School students in Bangalore in his honor. Business India has named him as one of the top business leaders. University of Rhode Island has recognized him as one of the outstanding Alumni. He was elected as a Board member of Free scale Semiconductors (a spin-off from Motorola) in 2013

He is now settled in Houston with his wife Rama. They have two children and two grandchildren. His daughter is a chemical engineer turned Intellectual Property Lawyer. His son is an Electrical engineer and an MBA.

Mr. K. Thiagarajan

MIT, Chromepet campus of Anna University, founded in 1949 by Sri C. Rajam, is a unique Institution and carved a niche for itself with pioneering ventures in unconventional engineering courses like Aeronautical engineering, Automobile engineering, Electronics engineering, Instrumentation Technology and subsequently adding Production Technology, Rubber and Plastic Technology, Information Technology and Computer Science and Engineering.

During the centenary birth year of Sri C. Rajam in 1982, MITAA instituted the scheme of presenting annual endowment lecture and award of Outstanding Alumnus in his memory. This year we choose an alumnus from the 23^rd batch Instrument Technology.

MITAA has the pleasure of honouring Mr. K. Thiagarajan of Instrumentation faculty as the Outstanding Alumnus for the year 2013.

Mr K. Thiagarajan had his schooling at National High School, Trichy later did his B.Sc. at St. Joseph’s College, Trichy, majoring Physics, and joined MIT, Chromepet to get his DMIT in Instrument technology and passed out in 1974. He started his career with BHEL, Trichy. Currently he is working at GASCO (Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Ltd), Abu Dhabi.

He is an “Ordinary man” with extra-ordinary features. His broad-mindedness beats many records as an alumnus. He is a very kindred spirit who had a humble beginning. He had to support his siblings’ even while at BHEL and had to be cautious with his earnings even for personal expenses. Then he chased a dream to produce a movie, (he had a passion for Stage even at MIT) this misadventure produced a serious financial and family difficulties but he had the willpower to get over the set back. He picked up the pieces slowly with the help of fellow Alumni with his indomitable spirit. Even in his personal life, he has accepted tremendous responsibilities and all the time lending his care-taker ship & extra-ordinary financial support to his extended family without expecting returns. Besides his major contribution to MIT, with his wife’s full support he also cared with gratitude many who are associated with our alma mater, which includes our Prof KVN also.

He had been a web moderator from 2009 for the MITian Non_Tech web forum and has forwarded/contributed over 5000 items in the web forum as of date. Mr. K. Thiagarajan is synonym of the word “Alumnus” in spirit & character.

Mr. K. Thiagarajan hails from Trichy and happily married to Srimathi Vijaya Lakshmi a homemaker and they are blessed with one son Mr. T. Ravikumar, a software engineer working as Project Manager in Singapore, and a daughter Srimathi Sumathi, presently a homemaker but a qualified Charted Accountant, living in Australia with her husband.
